Since Whole Body Cryotherapy chills the body, it causes an increase in the basal metabolic rate. Our body’s fat is formed in two main types: white fat and brown fat. White fat is the type we are all familiar with. It surrounds the organs and creates inflammation and resistance to insulin when it is excessive. Brown fat is the good fat. It is just like white fat except that it is very rich in mitochondria. This allows it to generate significant amounts of heat as needed. When the brown fat is strong and healthy, it can also create heat for the purposes of regulating the amounts of white fat. When white fat becomes excessive, the brown fat can burn it up for extra heat to control it and keep it at healthy levels.

Many researchers believe that one of the reasons for the current increases of obesity and diabetes is indoor climate control. Our genetic coding for thermoregulation has not changed significantly for 2.58 million years. During our history, we spent over 90% of the time in one ice age or another. The periods between ice ages, known as interglacial retreats were much more the exception than the norm.

In short, our bodies need episodic exposure to cold to properly control our metabolisms and our body mass.

Obesity and overweight now account for 70% of the American population according to statistics from the Center for Disease Control. The rates have gone up dramatically over the last few decades. As a consequence of obesity, diabetes has doubled since 1980.

All effective weight loss programs work by one shared method: they create a caloric deficit. Our bodies burn calories for fuel each day. This is done to keep us alive and to power specific activities. Anytime we burn less fuel than we ingest, we gain weight. If we burn more than we ingest, we lose weight.

Each pound of body fat we carry represents approximately 3500 calories of stored fuel. To lose a pound of body fat, we need to create a deficit of 3500 calories over a period of at least 1 week.

This can be done by 3 methods:

  • Consuming fewer calories
  • Burning more calories through exercise
  • Burning more calories through metabolism

Whole Body Cryotherapy is the only safe, non-stimulant method to significantly raise our metabolism.

Stimulants such as ephedra or fen-phen raise metabolism by no more than 5% and only work temporarily. Those who use them for longer periods of time find that more of the drug is required for the same effect, they become resistant. Furthermore, when they stop taking the drug or lower their dose, they find that they burn fewer calories than they did on their own before taking it.

A typical adult woman will burn 2000 calories per day without doing additional exercise. If she takes a stimulant, this can increase her metabolism to 2100 calories per day. Yet when she stops, her metabolism will likely drop to 1700 – 1900 calories per day.

Just as our bodies are better able to maintain their weight with temperatures like we were exposed to in our evolutionary past, they do better with the foods we were exposed to for the bulk of our evolutionary past.

From evaluating fossils and modern pre-technological cultures, it has become apparent that overweight only occurs when the human diet adds in grains, dairy foods and modern processed foods. The Cryotherapy Weight Loss Program focuses on foods that got early humans through our long history before farming and modern foods became available.

This program will help your body burn glucose more effectively. The foods that contain the densest concentrations of carbohydrate are grains, legumes, sweets, sugars and dairy. The foods our bodies can burn best for fuel without storing fat are animal proteins, vegetables, nuts and fruits.

By focusing on these foods not only will you be burning fat better but your energy levels will be more even throughout the day and you’ll have better mental focus. Within the first 1-2 days on this diet you will notice your cravings for sugar and starch completely disappear.

In the first week’s meal there will be some foods you like more than others. Try to have some of the foods that are not your favorite for variety’s sake. It is still OK to avoid the ones your really hate and double up on others.

Think of it as a fun experiment rather than another example of long term deprivation. Ironically you will have a very easy time adhering to the plan if you follow it exactly. Any foods, snacks, treats, beverages that are not listed are not recommended during this initial time frame.


Dietary Guidelines

Most of us are used to having the majority of our calories from grains and dairy and having only small quantities of produce. These proportions are badly out of sync with our bodies needs. If you leave out the grains, legumes sweets sugars and dairy and stick to tiny servings of produce, you won’t succeed. Please start out by serving at least twice as much low starch produce as you are used to and not limiting yourself if you want more. You will be much better satisfied and nourished by doing so.

Another really easy way to mix it up is use the weekly menu but vary the sources of protein and particular fruits and vegetables based on what you’re hungry for and what you have on hand.


Starting week’s diet:



2-3 poached eggs, 2 cups sauteed spinach, 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms





1 chicken breast, 1-2 cups steamed broccoli and 1/2 avocado, all rolled

into romaine lettuce leaves


4-6 ounces London Broil, large salad with red leaf lettuce, green

onions, tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and spike seasoning

Snack (optional)

1/2 apple, 1 handful of almonds



4 ounces smoked salmon topped with lemon juice and tomato slices, 2

cups steamed cauliflower


Can of kippered snacks, 1/2 baked sweet potato


4-6 ounces pork loin, 1-2 cups sauteed collard greens with garlic and 1/2 pear

Snack (optional)

Remaining 1/2 baked sweet potato, 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut slices



4-6 ounces pork loin, diced and scrambled with 2 eggs and 1 tbsp green chilies

General notes about food preparation

If you’re a good cook, have a blast with herbs and spices and dishes as elaborately flavored as you like.

If you can’t cook, don’t worry! This is really easy.

Most sit down restaurants can give you a protein such as a chicken breast, a small steak or a piece of fish, along with a serving of steamed vegetables. Feel free to order another one or two ‘to go’ for later meals. Another easy trick is get some nice frozen dinners from healthy supermarkets like Sprouts or Whole Foods. Just be sure to throw away the starch and desert before heating it.

Generic Recipe

Most other meals can be as easy as:

Heat a pan with a few teaspoons or so of oil

Cook a piece of protein for 5 minutes

Turn over – add in cut up veggies

Add 1/2 cup water and cover tightly

Take off heat and serve in another 5 minutes

Salads are also a great way to go. Pre-washed and cut greens are fine as are prepped, bagged vegetables. Open bags, pour into large bowl, add canned chicken or salmon, some olive oil and lemon juice and you’ve got a great meal. Another great trick is the prepped vegetables. Fresh and Easy stores are great for these. You can get broccoli, cauliflower, stir fried mixed veggies, prepped squash and more. These are easy to open into a pan and saute or steam. Pick up some pre-cooked chicken breast and a meal can be done in 5 minutes flat.
